SMTPMTA_DENIED_DOMAINS Parameter Fails After SMTP MTA Reloads Its Configuration
Problem:
A customer wishes to take advantage of the SMTPMTA_DENIED_DOMAINS=parameter in the NOTES.INI file to stop spam mail messages. This parameter has been set up correctly, as described in the Administrator's Guide, by creating an ASCII file listing the domains that messages should be denied from.
After starting the server and the SMTP MTA, attempting to send mail from a user in a denied domain works properly; the message is denied. However, as the SMTP MTA reloads its configuration from time to time (as designed), after the first time the configuration is automatically reloaded, the MTA ignores the SMTPMTA_DENIED_DOMAINS= parameter. All mail from the denied domain is now accepted.
Solution:
IMPORTANT: This NOTES.INI parameter is only available with Domino 4.6.2
and SMTP/MIME MTA Release 1.2. For more detailed information about this NOTES.INI parameter, refer to the document titled
"SMTPMTA_DENIED_DOMAINS
Not Filtering Domains" (#161189 (Document link: Lotus Notes Knowledge Base)).
This issue has been reported to Lotus Quality Engineering
Supporting Information:
The NOTES.INI variable (SMTPMTA_DENIED_DOMAINS) allows you to enter the PATHNAME of an ASCII file containing domains that your organization wants to prevent from sending mail. If it is NULL or not present, the MTA will accept mail promiscuously. For example:
SMTPMTA_DENIED_DOMAINS=C:\Notes\[filename] where the domain list file contains:
spam.lotus.com
harry.knownspammer.com
No messages will be accepted from the above named domains.
Note You must enter the last entry in the Denied Domain List twice so
that there is a duplicate entry. If there is only one Domain that you
want to deny access to your SMTP/MIME MTA, then place the name in the Denied Domain List file twice. For example - Denied Domain List:
spam.bogus.com
joe.somenet.com
joe.somenet.com
The Denied Domain Lists feature and the Helo Verify feature can be used together or independent of each other.
